The new work with plants is "the first experiment I know of where you can actually see what looks like a distributed computation taking place in a natural system," says Melanie Mitchell, who studies distributed emergent computation at Oregon Health and Science University in Beaverton. By employing patented algorithms for distributed computation, each CPU is allocated a portion of the query in parallel, vastly improving speed and allowing for near linear performance scalability as new CPUs are added. As a result life sciences researchers benefit from easy integration of data and applications via an intuitive interface coupled with high-performance distributed computation for large-scale bioinformatics studies. |
