Dmokhovskii, Vladislav Karlovich 

Born Apr. 7 (19), 1877, in Moscow; died May 26, 1952, in Moscow. Soviet scientist specializing in foundation construction, doctor of the technical sciences (1937), and major general of the technical engineering service (1943). Honored Worker in Science and Technology of the RSFSR (1949).

Dmokhovskii graduated from Moscow University in 1898 and from the Institute of Transportation Engineering in St. Petersburg in 1902. He was a professor (from 1928) at the Moscow Institute of Railroad Transport and at other institutes. In 1932 he became a department head at the V. V. Kuibyshev Military Engineering Academy. His principal studies were in pile arrangements (the theory of tapered piles) and in the transient stability of foundations, tunnels, and hydraulic-engineering structures. He was a consultant for a number of major construction projects in the USSR, including the Dnieper construction project, the Moscow subway, the Magnitogorsk construction project, and skyscrapers in Moscow. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, two Orders of the Red Star, and medals.
