On the central southern border of NM, south of Albuquerque; original county; organized Jan 9, 1852 (prior to statehood); annexed Arizona County 1861. Name Origin: For either Dona Ana Robledo, a woman famous for charity in the 1600s, or for Dona Ana Maria Nina de Cordova, a girl captured during an Apache raid and never seen again.

Area (sq mi): 3814.62 (land 3807.18; water 7.44). Pop per sq mi: 49.80.
Pop 2005: 189,444. State rank: 2. Pop change: 2000-20005 8.50%; 1990-2000 28.90%. Pop 2000: 174,682 (White 32.50%; Black or African American 1.60%; Hispanic or Latino 63.40%; Asian 0.80%; Other 29.90%). Foreign born: 18.70%. Median age: 30.20.
Income 2000: per capita $13,999; median household $29,808; Pop below poverty level: 25.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $17,829-$20,756.
