In central GA, southwest of Macon; organized Oct 26, 1870 from Montgomery, Pulaski, and Telfair counties. Name Origin: For William Earle Dodge (1805-83), U.S. representative from NY (1866-67) and owner of a vast estate in GA, who was active in the attempt to avoid the Civil War.
