Dogel’, Ivan Mikhailovich 

Born Mar. 7 (19), 1830, on the estate of Zales’e, now Vitebsk Oblast; died Aug. 16 (29), 1916, in Kazan. Russian pharmacologist.

Dogel’ graduated from the Medical and Surgical Academy in St. Petersburg in 1854, and from 1869 he was a professor in the subdepartment of pharmacology at the University of Kazan. His principal works dealt with pharmacology and with the physiology and anatomy of the cardiovascular and nervous systems. He was the first to establish the possibility of a reflex stopping of the heart by stimulating the mucous membrane of the nose with chloroform vapors. He used experiments extensively in the teaching of pharmacology. Dogel’ was an honorary member of the Military Medical Academy, the universities of Kazan and lur’ev (now Tartu), and foreign academies and societies.
