Dole, Elizabeth (Hanford) (1936– ) lawyer, cabinet member (wife of Robert Dole); born in Salisbury, N.C. Originally a Democrat, she was a Washington consumer protection lawyer in the 1970s. President Reagan's secretary of transportation (1983–87), she promoted auto safety. As President Bush's secretary of labor (1989–90), she ended the Pittsdown Coal Strike.
