Dole, Elizabeth

Dole, Elizabeth (Hanford) (1936–  ) lawyer, cabinet member (wife of Robert Dole); born in Salisbury, N.C. Originally a Democrat, she was a Washington consumer protection lawyer in the 1970s. President Reagan's secretary of transportation (1983–87), she promoted auto safety. As President Bush's secretary of labor (1989–90), she ended the Pittsdown Coal Strike. She became American Red Cross president in 1991.
