Dole, Sanford (Ballard) (1844–1926) judge, public official; born in Honolulu, Hawaii. The son of American missionaries, he studied at Williams College and became a leading lawyer on the Hawaiian islands. Long active in efforts to reform the native Hawaiian government, he became a leader after the revolution had overturned the Hawaiian monarchy (1893) and became president of the Republic of Hawaii (1894–98). He worked vigorously for annexation by the U.S.A. and served as the first territorial governor (1900–03) and as a judge in the U.S. district court (1903–15). How to thank TFD for its existence?
