Dolj 

a district in southern Rumania, in the southern part of the Getik plateau and the western edge of the lower Danube lowland. Area, 7,400 sq km. Population, 724,000 (1970). Its administrative center is Craiova. Industry is located mainly in Craiova and its environs. Machine building, the food industry, and the chemical industry are developed, as are the wood-products industry and clothing, textile, and leather enterprises. Crops are corn, wheat, sunflowers, sugar beets, and tobacco; there are vast vineyards. Cattle, pigs, and sheep are raised.

The School Inspectorate of Dolj County prevented, under various pretexts, a Baptist minister from teaching religion classes in the village of Carcea in the 2006-07 school year, despite the presence of 19 students requesting religion classes in this faith.
In Romania, avian influenza has continued spreading westward to Dolj County, close to the Bulgarian border, and southeast in Constanta and Tulcea counties.
