Dolmatovskii, Evgenii Aronovich 

Born Apr. 22 (May 5), 1915, in Moscow. Soviet Russian poet. Member of the CPSUfrom 1941.

Dolmatovskii graduated from the M. Gorky Literary Institute in 1937. He was first published in 1930. His collection Lyrics appeared in 1934 and Day in 1935. He fought in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45.

Dolmatovskii’s best work during the war years was the poem “Missing in Action” (the first part of the trilogy One Destiny, 1942-46). His novel in verse The Volunteers (1956) was devoted to the first builders of the subway and their subsequent destinies. Dolmatovskii is the author of popular song lyrics, including songs for films, the text of the oratorio Song of the Woods (1949), the eight ballads Loyalty (1970), the song The Homeland Hears .. . (1950), and other works set to the music of D. D. Shostakovich; he wrote the book of poems Song of Tomorrow (1949; State Prize of the USSR, 1950). Dolmatovskii’s poetry is marked by civic pride and passion. He has been awarded medals and five orders.
