Escallonia

 

a genus of plants of the family Saxifragaceae. The plants are small evergreen trees or shrubs. The alternate leaves have serrate edges with glandular pubescence. The aromatic white, pink, or red flowers are in panicled or racemose inflorescences. The fruit is a two-or three-celled capsule. There are about 60 species distributed in South America, primarily in the Andes. Several species, including E. macrantha, are ornamentals.
