Dondukov-Korsakov, Aleksandr Mikhailovich 

Born Sept. 12 (24), 1820, in St. Petersburg; died Apr. 15 (27), 1893, in the village of Polonaia, Pskov Province. Prince, general-adjutant from 1869, general of cavalry from 1878.

Dondukov-Korsakov took part in the war against Shamil (1845-51), the Crimean War (1853-56), and the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78. From 1869 to 1876 he was governor-general of the Kiev, Volyn’, and Podol’sk provinces. From 1878 to 1879 he was supreme Russian commissar in Bulgaria, where he worked on the administrative, judicial, financial, and military structure of the country. He helped work out the draft of the organizational statutes that was the basis of the first Bulgarian constitution, the Turnovo Constitution. From 1882 to 1890 he was chief civilian official in the Caucasus and commander of the armies of the Caucasus military region. He became a member of the State Council in 1890.
