Donetsk, University of 

a university founded in 1965 in Donetsk on the basis of the Pedagogical Institute organized in 1937. The university and the scientific institutions of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR created in Donetsk at the same time as the university form a single scientific and educational complex for the Donbas. The university comprises (1971) the mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, economics, history, and physiology departments; a graduate school; 52 subdepartments, 60 laboratories, and four museums; and a preparatory division for people preparing themselves for the entry examinations. The university library totals 500,000 volumes.

During the 1970-71 academic year, the university had approximately 14,000 students, 700 teachers, who included 28 professors and doctors of sciences (of whom 14 were academicians and corresponding members of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR), and 232 docents and candidates of sciences. The university publishes textbooks and scientific literature.
