Dorokhov, Ivan Semenovich
Born in 1762; died Apr. 26 (May 8), 1815, in Tula. Buried in Vereia. Hero of the Patriotic War of 1812; lieutenant general (1812). Dorokhov graduated from the Engineering Cadet School in 1787 and took part in the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-91. In 1795 he joined the cavalry and in 1803 took command of the Izium Hussar Regiment, with which he took part in the war of 1806-07 against France. In 1812 he commanded the rearguard of the Second Army. At the battle of Borodino he led an attack of four cavalry regiments near the village of Semenovskoe that delayed the advance of the enemy. On September 6 he became commander of a partisan detachment that liberated Vereia on September 29. On October 7 he informed M. I. Kutuzov of the start of Napoleon’s retreat from Moscow.
