Dorr, John Van Nostrand (1872–1962) chemical engineer, metallurgist; born in Newark, N.J. While managing a cyanide mill in South Dakota in the early 1900s, he developed the Dorr classifier for extracting ore, which became a practical method for the separation and chemical treatment of fine solids suspended in liquid. His technology was used in sewage treatment, water purification, desilting projects, and sugar production. He founded the Dorr Company in New York City (1916) and the Dorr Foundation (1950).
