The building obviously has great bones, and a number of 1940s design touches were appreciated in our room: high ceiling, crown molding, baseboards, walk-in closet, double-hung windows that actually open (a blessing in a city of such moderate climate and invigorating air). And a building deemed to be of historical significance can be given no exterior alterations for any reason; the footprint cannot be increased to add another bathroom or bedroom, and owners cannot construct a garage or replace the double-hung windows. The "new" structure now stands six stories tall with a custom metal gate at the front entrance and is clad, overall, in imported French limestone with limestone sills and heads, and custom manufactured, double-hung German-mahogany windows. |
