Doubleday, Frank Nelson (1862–1934) publisher; born in Brooklyn, N.Y. He rose in the ranks at Charles Scribner's Sons and in 1897, with Samuel S. McClure, founded Doubleday & McClure. An aggressive businessman, he attracted top authors; the firm, which he headed amid various partnership changes and mergers, became a top U.S. publishing company. He also started a chain of bookstores.
