Doughty, Thomas, 1793–1856, American painter of the Hudson River school Hudson River school, group of American landscape painters, working from 1825 to 1875. The 19th-century romantic movements of England, Germany, and France were introduced to the United States by such writers as Washington Irving and James Fenimore Cooper.

His paintings, few in number, are mostly of river scenery. Among the best are On the Hudson and A River Glimpse (Metropolitan Mus.); A View of the Schuylkill (Edinburgh Mus.); and others in the Corcoran Gallery, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

Doughty, Thomas (1793–1856) painter; born in Philadelphia. Based in Philadelphia, he was a leather merchant until 1820, painted landscapes, and was associated with the Hudson River School. He is remembered for his treatment of light in paintings such as In Nature's Wonderland (1836).
