Douglas State Forest


Location:On the southern border of central Massachusetts, bordering both Connecticut and Rhode Island. Accessible via Mass Pike (I-90).
Facilities:Picnic area, pavilion, group day-use area, trails, 2 boat ramps, swimming beach (é) and bathhouses, restrooms (é), interpretive center.
Activities:Boating (all types), canoeing, fishing, swimming, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, hunting (with restrictions), cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, interpretive programs (seasonal).
Special Features:Forest includes a rare example of Atlantic white cedar swampland. A 5-acre portion of the swamp is designated as a Massachusetts Wildland and is accessible to the public via a boardwalk trail. The Midstate Trail, a long-distance hiking trail that extends through the central part of the state to Mount Watatic in the north, runs through the forest.
