Dowie, John Alexander (dou`ē), 1847–1907, founder of the Christian Catholic Church Christian Catholic Church, religious denomination founded (1896) in Chicago by John Alexander Dowie . Its members are sometimes known as Zionites. The church has its center in Zion , Ill., which Dowie founded (1901) as a religious community. ..... Click the link for more information. , b. Scotland. He emigrated (1860) to Australia, where he was ordained as a Congregational minister. Dowie's teaching included belief in the healing of disease by prayer, and he founded the International Divine Healing Association. Dowie went to the United States in 1888; he founded his church in Chicago in 1896. In 1901, Dowie established Zion, Ill., which was composed of his followers and governed by special regulations laid down by him.
