Downey, Sheridan

Downey, Sheridan (1884–1961) U.S. senator; born in Laramie, Wyo. A lawyer, he began his political career as a Republican district attorney in Wyoming; then, having moved to California, he emerged as a liberal Democrat. Elected to the U.S. Senate (Dem., Calif.; 1939–50), he supported old age pension plans, restrictions on the military, land reclamation projects, and state control of offshore oil resources.
