Drake

the passage between Tierra del Fuego and the South Shetland Islands, linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It is the widest strait on the globe (900 to 950 km) and has depths up to 5,840 m. Powerful storms are frequent. In winter the southern part is covered with ice floes, and in summer there are many icebergs in the strait. The strait is named for F. Drake, who sailed through it in 1578.
