Dream Cycles

Dream Cycles

(dreams)

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep recurs on a regular rhythm of ninety-minute intervals sometimes called dream cycles. The association of this rhythm with dreaming cycles builds upon earlier research that seemed to correlate REM sleep with dream periods. Subsequent research has indicated, however, that significant dreaming takes place during non-REM sleep, which has called earlier notions of “dream cycles” into question.
