Drebbel, Cornelis Jacobszoon (kôrnā`lĭs yä`kôpsōn drĕb`əl), 1572–1634, Dutch inventor, physicist, and mechanician. His major inventions were an atmospherically driven clock and the first navigable submarine submarine, naval craft capable of operating for an extended period of time underwater. Submarines are almost always warships, although a few are used for scientific or business purposes (see also submersible).
