Drin (drēn), river, c.175 mi (280 km) long, formed at Kukës, NE Albania, by the confluence of the White Drin, which rises in Serbia (Kosovo province) and the Black Drin, which flows out of Lake Ohrid in S Albania. It is the largest river of Albania. The Drin flows generally west through deep gorges and then onto the coastal plain before turning south and entering the Adriatic Sea S of Lezhë. North of Lezhë, a distributary (formed 1858–59) diverts some of the flow to the Bojana River. The Drin is not navigable.
Drin (Drini), the largest river in Albania, formed by the confluence of the Black Drin and White Drin. Length, 148 km (including the Black Drin, which rises in Lake Ohrid, 281 km). Basin area, 12,600 sq km. It rises in Yugoslavia and flows primarily through mountains. In the middle course the Drin cuts through the southern spurs of the North Albanian Alps and flows in a gorge 50 km long and up to 1,000 m deep. In the lower reaches, in the coastal lowlands, it divides into two arms. The southern arm empties into Drin Gulf of the Adriatic Sea; the northern arm, the main one, is a left tributary of the Bojana River, which flowsfrom Lake Shkodér. There is high water in the cold half of the year and low water in the summer. During the flood season the Drin raises the level of Lake Shkoder, which floods the shores at the city of Shkoder. The average discharge is 290 cu m per sec, and the lower reaches of the Drin are navigable. The cities of Kukûs and Lesh are located on the Drin. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
