autonomous vehicle
A passenger vehicle that drives by itself. Also known as the "driverless car," it automatically steers the vehicle by sensing the painted lines in the road or a magnetic monorail embedded in the road. In the late 1990s, prototype systems were built in Italy and the U.S. See automotive systems.

POLICE were called after a driverless car crashed into a lamppost and flipped over on to its roof today.
Byline: ANI London, Aug 12 (ANI): Battery-operated driverless cars with bug-eyed windows will soon be carrying passengers at the Heathrow Airport.
When the Pentagon's premiere research lab held a robot race across the California desert three years ago, it not only generated excitement in industry and academia, but also created skeptics who scoffed at the idea of driverless cars and trucks traveling 142 miles on their own.
