Drum, Hugh

    0.01 sec.
Drum, Hugh (Aloysius) (1879–1951) soldier; born in Fort Brady, Mich. After obtaining a commission in 1898 in memory of his father, one of the few officers killed in action during the Spanish-American War, he fought in the Philippines (1889–1901). In World War I he played an important role as chief of staff of the American First Army. A new style manager/soldier, he excelled in staff and administrative assignments during the ensuing years, but was passed over for army chief of staff in 1939 in favor of George C. Marshall. He commanded home front units until his retirement in 1943, when he became president of the Empire State Corporation.
