Alexander . 1921--92, Czechoslovak statesman. His reforms as first secretary of the Czechoslovak Communist Party (1968--69) prompted the Russian occupation (1968) and his enforced resignation. Following the uprising of 1989 he was elected chairman of the new Czechoslovak Federal Assembly

He also foresaw, with astonishing precision, democratization in Czechoslovakia, with a revival of former communist dictator Dubcek and close allies; the opening of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany as the core for a United Europe; the implementation of "democracy" in such countries as Romania and Hungary; the end of the Warsaw Pact; and the efforts of Eastern European governments to join the European Community as a prelude to unification with the West.
He pretended to take the presidency of the country reluctantly, but actually desperately desired the job and maneuvered to keep it out of the hands of Alexander Dubcek, his rival for most-admired Czechoslovakian.
A few pages describe the negotiation between Brezhnev and his henchmen and Dubcek "and his colleagues," without any sense of the popular uprising (stones against tanks in Wenceslas square), the radical disparity of forces, the West's outrage and inaction.
