Dubovoi, Ivan Naumovich 

Born Sept. 12 (24), 1896, in the village of Novoselitsa, Chigirin District, Kiev Province (now Cherkassy Oblast); died July 29, 1938. Became an army commander second class in 1935. Member of the CPSU from 1917. The son of a coal miner.

Dubovoi was drafted into the army during World War I and graduated from the ensign school in 1917. He was active in the Great October Socialist Revolution, organizing a Red Guard detachment in the Donbas in 1917. In 1918 he became assistant chief of staff of the Tenth Army in Tsaritsyn and chief of staff of the Ukrainian Front’s Kievan line of advance in 1919. Subsequently he commanded the First Ukrainian Army. In June 1919, Dubovoi became division commander of the 44th Infantry Division (which in August 1919 was commanded by N. A. Shchors). Dubovoi fought in battles against the forces of Petliura, Denikin, and bourgeois Poland. In 1924 he became a corps commander and in 1929 was deputy commander of the Ukrainian Military District. Beginning in 1935, Dubovoi commanded the Kharkov Military District. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner.
