Duceppe, Gilles (zhēl düsĕp`), 1947–, French-Canadian separatist politician, b. Montreal. A union negotiator from 1977 to 1990 and a Quebec separtatist from 1967, Duceppe was a founding member of the Parti Québécois Parti Québécois (PQ), provincial political party committed to the independence of Quebec. Founded in 1968, it soon became a force in provincial elections. In 1976, led by René Lévesque, it captured control of the provincial assembly.

He served as party whip (1990–96) for the Bloc Québécois in Ottawa and has been its parliamentary leader since 1997. Duceppe is an advocate of "sovereignty-association," in which an independent Quebec would exist in a European Union–like political and economic association with the rest of Canada.
