Dudka
in Russia, Byelorussia, and the Ukraine, the general name given to folk musical instruments of the transverse flute family. In Russian these instruments are also known by the name of sopel’ and svirel’. In the Ukraine the name sopylka has been preserved to the present; in Russia the name sopel’ is rarely used today; and in Byelorussia the name sopel’ has been completely forgotten and replaced by the term dudka. Sometimes the volynka (bagpipe) is also called a dudka (a diminutive of duda). Want to thank TFD for its existence?
