Dufferin and Ava, Frederick Temple Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, 1st marquess ofDufferin and Ava, Frederick Temple Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, 1st marquess of (dŭf`ərĭn, ä`və, ā`və), 1826–1902, British diplomat. He served on numerous missions abroad, as governor-general of Canada (1872–78), ambassador to Russia (1879–81), ambassador to Turkey (1881–82), commissioner to Egypt (1882–83), viceroy of India (1884–88), ambassador to Italy (1888–91), and ambassador to France (1891–96).
