Dufy, Raoul (rä l` düfē`), 1877–1953, French painter, illustrator, and decorator, studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. After meeting Matisse he abandoned his early impressionist style and turned c.1905 to the more spontaneous expression of fauvism fauvism (fō`vĭzəm) [Fr...... Click the link for more information. . For a time he designed fabrics for the dressmaker Paul Poiret and illustrated books, including the writings of Apollinaire, Mallarmé, and Gide. Using swift, stenographic brushstrokes, he developed a remarkable linear virtuosity and brilliant color. Typical is his watercolor The Palm (Mus. of Modern Art, New York City). BibliographySee biography by R. Cogniat (1962); study by A. Werner (1970). Dufy, Raoul(born June 3, 1877, Le Havre, Fr.—died March 23, 1953, Forcalquier) French painter and designer. In 1900 he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and experimented with Impressionism, but by 1904 he had adopted the flat areas of bright colour typical of Fauvism. In the early 1920s he developed a distinctive style characterized by rapid calligraphic drawing on backgrounds of bright, decorative colour; his subjects were usually recreational scenes such as horse races, parades, and concerts.
