Dumbadze, Nodar Vladimirovich

Born July 14, 1928, in Tbilisi. Soviet Georgian author. Member of the CPSU since 1964.

Dumbadze, a graduate from the economics department of the University of Tbilisi, published a collection of humorous stories, The Village Boy, in 1959. His novella Grandmother, Iliko, Illarion, and I (1960; Russian translation, 1967) and his novel I See the Sun (1960) portray the life in Georgian collective farm villages during the Great Patriotic War (1941-45). These works depict the spiritual beauty and nobility, the humanism, and the patriotism of the Soviet people. The novel The Sunny Night (1967) is devoted to the life of young students. In his novel Don’t be Afraid, Mama! (1971), Dumbadze portrays the life of Soviet border guards. Dumbadze’s works, organically combining humor with dramatic lyricism, have been made into plays and films. In 1966, Dumbadze was awarded the prize of the Central Committee of the All-Union Lenin Communist Youth League (Komsomol). He is presently an editor of the Georgian satirical journal Niangi (Crocodile).
