Dundalk, town, Republic of Ireland

Dundalk (dəndôk`), town (1991 pop. 30,061), seat of Co. Louth, NE Republic of Ireland, near the mouth of the Castletown River at Dundalk Bay. It has a port that exports livestock, barley, and other crops. Industries include tobacco, clothing, shoe, and computer factories, distilleries and breweries, flour and linen mills, fishing. Dundalk is also a railroad center with facilities for the manufacture and maintenance of railroad equipment. The town was often besieged because of its location at a natural pass into N Ireland.

Dundalk (dŭn`dôlk'), city (1990 pop. 65,800), Baltimore co., NE Md., a suburb of Baltimore, on the Patapsco River; inc. 1946. It has one of the world's largest steel plants and a nine-berth marine terminal, operated by the Maryland Port Authority. Factories there make electronic parts, auto bodies, and yachts. The first house built (1665) in the city was burned by the British after their march on Washington (1814) during the War of 1812. U.S. Fort Holabird is nearby.
