Dunfermline (dŭnförm`lĭn, dŭm–), city (1991 pop. 52,105), Fife, E central Scotland, on the Firth of Forth. It is a center for the manufacture of table linen and terylene, a synthetic fabric, and has silk mills, collieries, and engineering works. The naval base of Rosyth became part of the city in 1911. Dunfermline abbey, founded by Malcolm III of Scotland in the 11th cent., holds his remains and those of his wife, St. Margaret, and of Robert I. The palace was a favorite seat of Scottish kings and was the birthplace of Charles I of England. Andrew Carnegie Carnegie, Andrew , 1835–1919, American industrialist and philanthropist, b. Dunfermline, Scotland. His father, a weaver, found it increasingly difficult to get work in Scottish factories and in 1848 brought his family to Allegheny (now Pittsburgh), Pa.
