In southeastern NC, south of Goldsboro; organized 1750 (prior to statehood) from New Hanover County. Name Origin: For Thomas Hay (1710-87), Lord Duplin, member of the Board of Trade and Plantations.

Area (sq mi): 819.11 (land 817.73; water 1.38). Pop per sq mi: 63.60.
Pop 2005: 51,985. State rank: 51. Pop change: 2000-20005 6.00%; 1990-2000 22.70%. Pop 2000: 49,063 (White 55.20%; Black or African American 28.90%; Hispanic or Latino 15.10%; Asian 0.20%; Other 12.30%). Foreign born: 11.30%. Median age: 34.90.
Income 2000: per capita $14,499; median household $29,890; Pop below poverty level: 19.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $20,901-$20,827.
Unemployment 2004: 5.80%. Change from 2000: -0.40%. Median travel time to work: 26.60 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 32.30%.

Citizens for a Safe Environment, founded in neighboring Duplin County nine years ago to fight a regional landfill, is lobbying legislators to effectively ban the plant.
Sheriff Blake Wallace said in a statement that the system "is another tool in our arsenal to make Duplin County an even safer place to live, work and raise a family.
Earlier Shaver was associate superintendent of the Duplin County Schools and principal of a high school and a middle school in Guilford County, all in North Carolina.
