Durand, William (Frederick) (1859–1958) educator, marine/aeronautic engineer; born in Beacon Falls, Conn. He was an authority on the dynamics of ship and airplane propellers and developed ways of minimizing loss of propulsive efficiency. He taught engineering at Lafayette College, and Cornell and Stanford Universities, retiring in 1924. He was an advisor on the Boulder and Grand Coulee Dam projects.
