Durnovo, Nikolai Nikolaevich 

Born Oct. 23 (Nov. 4), 1876, in Moscow; died 1936. Soviet philologist and Slavic scholar; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1924). Professor at the Universities of Saratov (1918), Minsk, and Moscow.

Durnovo lived in Czechoslovakia from 1924 to 1929. He undertook the study of the Russian language and its dialects: Short Outline of Russian Dialectology (1914), Dialectological Research in the Area of the Great Russian Dialects (part 1, fasc. 1: The Southern Great Russian Subdialect, 1917), Outline of the History of Russian (1924), and Introduction to the History of Russian (1927). He was the author of the Grammatical Dictionary (1924), the first Russian dictionary of linguistic terms.
