In southeastern NY, north of NYC, original county, organized Nov 1, 1683. Name Origin: For Mary (1658-1718), Duchess of York, wife of James, Duke of York and Albany, later James II, king of England; spelling is 17th-century variant of duchess.

Area (sq mi): 825.38 (land 801.59; water 23.78). Pop per sq mi: 367.80.
Pop 2005: 294,849. State rank: 14. Pop change: 2000-20005 5.20%; 1990-2000 8.00%. Pop 2000: 280,150 (White 80.30%; Black or African American 9.30%; Hispanic or Latino 6.40%; Asian 2.50%; Other 4.50%). Foreign born: 8.40%. Median age: 36.70.
Income 2000: per capita $23,940; median household $53,086; Pop below poverty level: 7.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $31,535-$32,635.
Unemployment 2004: 4.20%. Change from 2000: 1.00%. Median travel time to work: 29.80 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 30.70%.

    The new tuition ranges from a high of $3,450 at Westchester Community College to $2,800 a year at Dutchess County, Monroe and Hudson Valley community colleges.
