Dwight, John Sullivan (1813–93) music critic; born in Boston, Mass. Harvard-educated, he served as a minister and lived for a while at the socialistic Brook Farm Community before returning to his early love of music. In 1852 he founded Dwight's Journal of Music, which over the next three decades was an effective, high-minded, and notably conservative voice in promoting European-oriented classical music in the U.S.A.
