Dzhumaliev, Khazhim
(also Kazhigali Dzhumaliev). Born Dec. 15 (28), 1907, in present-day Ural’sk Oblast, Kazakh SSR; died Dec. 23, 1968, in Alma-Ata. Soviet Kazakh poet. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR (1967). Member of the CPSU from 1941. Dzhumaliev graduated from the department of literature of the Kazakh Pedagogical Institute. His verses of the 1920’s and his narrative poem Erkhoza and Egizbai (1928) depict the class struggle in the aul (village); the narrative poem The Bloody Pass (1934) describes life in the Kazakh aul. Dzhumaliev wrote the libretto for the opera Birzhan and Sara (1941; State Prize of the USSR, 1948), the drama The Battle (1947, with A. Sarsenbaev), and a number of studies on Kazakh literature.
