Dziewonski, Adam Marian (1936– ) seismologist; born in Lwow, Poland. He performed seismological research in Poland before joining the Southwest Center for Advanced Studies at the University of Texas in 1965. He was a member of the Center for Earth and Planetary Physics at Harvard University, and was chairman of Harvard's Department of Geological Science (1982–86). He utilized seismic wave movement and geomagnetic soundings to determine physical properties of the earth's crust.
