(geophysics) A unit of horizontal gradient of gravitational acceleration, equal to a change in gravitational acceleration of 10-9galileo over a horizontal distance of 1 centimeter. Eötvös (also Eötvös unit), a subsidiary unit of gradient of acceleration of free fall in a gravitational field, equal to a change in acceleration of 10–6 m/sec2 upon a change in altitude of 1 km—that is, equal to 10–9 sec–2.
