Miscanthus

a genus of perennial herbaceous plants of the family Gramineae. The long, flat leaves are broadly linear. The paired spikelets are single-flowered, surrounded by long white or pinkish silver hairs, and gathered into fan-shaped apical panicles. There are about 25 species, distributed from tropical and southern Africa to East and Southeast Asia. In the USSR three species—Miscanthus sacchariflorus, M. purpurascens, and M. sinensis—are found in the southern Far East, Sakhalin, and the Kuril Islands. The plants can be used as forage for livestock (before flowering) and for silage. The stems can be woven, and the roots can be used to make brushes. The plants are grown as ornamentals and are used in dried bouquets.
