titanium dioxide [tī′tā·nē·əm dī′äk‚sīd]
(inorganic chemistry)
TiO2A white, water-insoluble powder that melts at 1560°C, and which is produced commercially from the titanium dioxide minerals ilmenite and rutile; used in paints and cosmetics. Also known as titania; titanic anhydride; titanium oxide; titanium white.

A white pigment having a very high opacity; used in paints; occurs in two crystalline forms, anatase and rutile, of which the latter has higher opacity.
