In our patient, the value of EBUS was threefold: (i) the technique is minimally invasive and safe compared with a surgical procedure; (ii) it was used to localise the lesion not abutting the bronchial wall and the proximity of major vessels, precluding conventional bronchoscopy; and (iii) the longer EBUS needle was used owing to the depth of the lesion.
The linear EBUS probe has been built into a dedicated flexible bronchoscope to enable real- time TBNA biopsies (Fig-2).
No complications, either related to the procedure or to bronchoscopic damage, other than minimal hemorrhage, were observed with the use of EBUS TBNA.
Furthermore, it has been reported that the sensitivity and specificity of using EBUS in determining invasion of the trachea and bronchus by tumors were significantly higher than that of using CT and magnetic resonance imaging.
However, whether or not, EBUS elastography can be used for the noninvasive discrimination of benign and malignant thoracic lymph nodes as a guide for EBUS-TBNA remains unknown.
