EPUB

Also found in: Acronyms 0.01 sec.
EPUB
(Electronic PUBlishing) An open standard for electronic books and Web publishing from the International Digital Publishing Forum (www.idpf.org). Introduced in 2007 as the successor to the Open eBook format, EPUB documents are marked up in XHTML or Digital Talking Book (DTBook).

OPS, OCF and OPF
An EPUB document conforms to three IDPF standards. OPS (Open Publication Structure) defines the markup language. OCF (Open Container Format) is a zipped archive with an .EPUB extension that contains the marked-up publication, related images and an OPF (Open Packaging Format) file that references everything in the OCF, provides meta-data and ties it all together. See Open eBook.

SUPPORTS EPUB FORMAT The Kindle, which has taken a page from Apple Inc's dominance in the digital music industry, operates on a closed system in which books ordered on Amazon can only be read on the Kindle, or on the iPhone or iPod Touch.
Google will provide the books to the Sony Reader in the EPUB (electronic publication) format, which lets the lines flow differently to fit a smaller screen.
And because the Reader supports multiple eBook formats, including Adobe eBook and EPUB, it can be used with hundreds of thousands of free and purchasable books available from multiple eBook stores, websites and public libraries.
