ESDI

(Enhanced Small Device Interface) A hard disk interface that transfers data in the one to three MByte/sec range. ESDI was the high-speed interface for small computers for a while, but has been superseded by IDE and SCSI drives. See hard disk.

Known for his trenchant views on the virtues of European cooperation, Bolton had written that ESDI was a "dagger at the heart of NATO.
The interface has progressed from ESDI, which operates at the bit level, to IPI-2 at the physical sector level, to SCSI and ATA, which work at the logical block level.
Their prospective relationship to ESDI is thus unclear and, in any case, it inevitably complicates the picture.
