Ealing (ē`lĭng), outer borough (1991 pop. 263,600) of Greater London, SE England. It is highly industrialized: motor vehicles, scientific instruments, glass, plastics, and engineering products are manufactured. Thames Valley Univ. is there, and the largest Sikh temple outside India is located in the Southall district. Cardinal Newman went to school in Ealing, and the former French king Louis Philippe taught in the borough. The biologist Thomas Huxley Huxley, Thomas Henry, 1825–95, English biologist and educator, grad. Charing Cross Hospital, 1845. Huxley gave up his own biological research to become an influential scientific publicist and was the principal exponent of Darwinism in England.
