Established: 1982. Description: Develops innovative projects for the conservation, preservation, and restoration of the global environment. Provides support to creative individuals for their work on ecologically linked issues. Projects include the John Muir Project, International Marine Mammal Project, Brower Fund, Reef Protection International, Global Service Corps, and the Campaign to Safeguard America's Waters. Members: 7,500. Dues: $25/year; $15/year for students and low-income members.
Publications: Earth Island Journal (quarterly); free to members, $15/year for nonmembers.

The Save Japan Dolphins Coalition--consisting of the International Marine Mammal Project of Earth Island Institute, Elsa Nature Conservancy of Japan, In Defense of Animals, and Animal Welfare Institute--has worked to protect dolphins from slaughter and captivity.
Earth Island Institute director David Phillips added: "Killing nearly a million small cetaceans is commercial whaling, and allowing the toxic meat to be given to school children is criminal.
The Thoreau Center and the Earth Island Institute are happy to announce that all of their 100+ NGO offices and projects will be carbon neutral throughout 2007 thanks to a generous donation of ecosystem restoration carbon offsets from Planktos, Inc.
